# Buying a ZX2 today

> The youngest ZX2 is now over twenty years old. Most are cheap, which means most have been run cheaply. This checklist covers the problems that show up most in recalls, service bulletins and owner reports.

## Checklist

1. **Run the VIN for recalls**: Check nhtsa.gov/recalls, searching by VIN. NHTSA files these cars as Escorts. On 2000 cars, look for the seat belt buckle recall. On a 1999 S/R, look for the shift-pattern plaque on the console.
2. **Drive an automatic cold** [Common failure]: Watch how quickly it engages, listen for a clunk into reverse, and feel for slipping or a delayed 2–3 shift. Check the fluid's color and smell.
3. **Let it idle with the A/C on** [Common failure]: Warm it up and let the A/C cycle. Look for surging, a rolling idle or stalling. Scan for codes, especially P1381 and P1383.
4. **Look for oil**: Around the valve cover, in the spark plug wells and at the PCV system.
5. **Check the cooling system**: Coolant at the thermostat housing, damp carpet or fogging glass (heater core), and a fan that cycles off once the engine is warm.
6. **Ask about the timing belt** [Critical]: Ford's interval is 120,000 miles. With no record of a change, budget for a belt, tensioner and water pump right away.
7. **Watch the engine mounts**: Shift between drive and reverse with your foot on the brake and watch for the engine lurching.
8. **Check the suspension and brakes**: Look for broken rear coil springs, worn tie rods and tired struts. Listen for brake grinding, and check front pad wear is even.
9. **Check the body**: Floors, rear arches and sills for rust; driver's door for sag; seat-back release covers for cracks.
10. **Check the fuel gauge (1998)**: Compare the gauge with a fill-up. Early cars could read about 1/8 tank off.

## Which year?

- **1998–99 Cool and Hot.** The original car. The Hot carries most of the options, and 1998 cars collected the most service bulletins.
- **2000.** One trim with firmer suspension, and the last year of the S/R.
- **2002–2003 Premium.** The best-equipped ZX2s, with power windows and locks, keyless entry and fog lamps. The 2003 cars have the facelift and are the only years with a frontal crash rating.

If you want a manual, the 5-speed avoids the automatic's well-documented failures.

## Is it an S/R?

S/R parts get swapped onto ordinary cars, and S/R cars lose them. Before paying an S/R premium, work through the [S/R identification guide](https://zx2ms.com/wiki/sr/identify).
