# Fluids, parts and capacities

> Reference values from Ford's 2002 Escort and ZX2 owner's guide, plus Ford's service schedules. Earlier cars may differ, so check the labels under the hood before buying parts.

Confidence tags: [Confirmed] means two or more sources agree, [Reported] means one source or owner report, [Disputed] means sources conflict. Ford's own literature is treated as a primary source.

> Values on this page come from the [2002 owner's guide](https://zx2ms.com/wiki/brochures/2002-ford-escort-zx2-owners-guide.pdf), pages 195–198, unless marked otherwise. The guide covers both the Escort sedan and the ZX2; only the ZX2's 2.0L DOHC Zetec figures are listed here. [Ford owner's guide]

## Capacities

| Fluid | Spec | Capacity |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Engine oil, with filter | Motorcraft SAE 5W-20 (WSS-M2C153-H). Earlier manuals reportedly call for 5W-30. | 4.25 L (4.5 qt) |
| Manual transaxle | Motorcraft MERCON ATF (XT-2-QDX) | 3.35 L (3.55 qt) |
| Automatic transaxle | Motorcraft MERCON ATF (XT-2-QDX) | 3.9 L (4.1 qt) |
| Coolant, manual | Motorcraft Premium (green) or Premium Gold (yellow) | 5.0 L (5.3 qt) |
| Coolant, automatic | Same | 6.0 L (6.3 qt) |
| Brake and clutch fluid | DOT 3 (ESA-M6C25-A) | Fill to line |
| Power steering | Motorcraft MERCON ATF | Fill to line |
| Washer fluid | Ultra-Clear concentrate | 2.2 L (2.32 qt) |
| Fuel tank | 87 octane regular unleaded | 48.5 L (12.8 gal) |

The manual transaxle is filled with ATF, which surprises a lot of owners. Ford's 2003 service data also approves 75W-90 GL-4 gear oil. [Service data] The hydraulic clutch shares the brake master cylinder's reservoir.

The S/R's Ford Racing calibration is tuned for premium fuel, but Ford's 1999 S/R release says premium is "recommended but not mandatory". [Ford release] For the standard car, the owner's guide says premium isn't recommended in the standard car and can make cold-start problems worse.

## Coolant

Use the type the car was filled with at the factory, green or gold; check the reservoir. **Don't add orange extended-life coolant** (VC-2, WSS-M97B44-D). Ford warns that mixing it with the factory coolant degrades corrosion protection. Keep the mix at 50/50, and never below 40% or above 60% coolant.

## Motorcraft part numbers

| Part | Number |
| --- | --- |
| Oil filter | FL-2005 |
| Air filter | FA-1643 |
| Fuel filter | FG-862 |
| PCV valve | EV-239A |
| Spark plugs | AZFS-32FE |
| Battery | BXT-58 |

The Escort sedan's SOHC engine uses a different oil filter, PCV valve and spark plugs, so check what you're buying.

## Spark plugs and engine data

| Item | ZX2 Zetec |
| --- | --- |
| Spark plug | Motorcraft AZFS-32FE |
| Plug gap | **1.22–1.32 mm (0.048–0.052 in)** |
| Firing order | 1-3-4-2 |
| Ignition | Distributorless (DIS) |
| Compression | 9.6:1 |
| Displacement | 121 cu in |

The 1.3–1.4 mm gap often quoted online is for the sedan's SOHC engine, not the Zetec. The emissions (VECI) label under the hood is authoritative for your car. Ford asks that a removed plug go back into the same cylinder.

## Bulbs

| Lamp | Bulb |
| --- | --- |
| Headlamps, high and low | 9007 |
| Front park and turn | 3457AK (amber) |
| Fog lamps | 881 |
| Brake and tail | 3157K |
| Backup | 3156K |
| High-mount brake | 921 |
| License plate | 168 |
| Dome lamp | 12V 10W |

## Towing

- **Trailer:** up to 1,000 lb (454 kg), with a maximum tongue load of 100 lb (45 kg). Not before the first 500 miles.
- **Behind another vehicle:** a manual ZX2 can be flat-towed with all four wheels down. An automatic needs the front wheels on a dolly.
- **Tire chains:** SAE Class S chains on P185/65R14 tires only. Ford says not to use chains on the 15-inch wheel and tire options.

## Scheduled maintenance

From Ford's 2003 Normal Service schedule. [Service data]

| Interval | Service |
| --- | --- |
| Every 5,000 mi | Oil and filter (every 3,000 mi under severe conditions) |
| 30k, 60k, 90k mi | Air filter, fuel filter |
| 100,000 mi | Spark plugs, PCV valve, inspect accessory belt (plugs at 60k under some severe conditions) |
| 120,000 mi | Timing belt |
| 5 yr / 100k mi, then every 3 yr / 50k mi | Coolant (yellow Premium Gold) |

The 1998 schedule differs: air filter every 30,000 miles or 30 months, coolant strength checked every 15,000 miles or 12 months, PCV valve at 60,000 and 120,000 miles, and the clutch pedal and CV boots inspected every 30,000 miles. It lists no timing belt replacement.

## Timing belt

Ford's 2003 schedule replaces the timing belt at **120,000 miles**. Owners report the same figure from dealers for earlier cars, whose schedules don't list it. Sources still disagree on whether the engine is interference. [Disputed] On a car of this age with unknown history, replace the belt and tensioner rather than gamble. See [Engine and drivetrain](https://zx2ms.com/wiki/engine#timing-belt).

## After a battery disconnect

The engine has to relearn its idle and fuel trim. Ford's procedure: warm the engine to operating temperature, idle for at least a minute, idle another minute with the A/C on, then drive at least 10 miles. Automatics also relearn shift feel and may shift firmly at first.
