# Reading a ZX2 VIN

> The VIN tells you the model year, engine and plant. It doesn't record trim level or option packages, so it can't prove a car is an S/R on its own.

## VIN positions

- **1–3 · 3FA**: Built in Mexico, Ford passenger car
- **8 · 3**: Engine code for the 2.0L Zetec DOHC
- **10 · W–Y, 1–3**: W 1998, X 1999, Y 2000, 1 2001, 2 2002, 3 2003
- **11 · R**: Assembly plant code (Hermosillo)

Decoding is based on standard Ford coding for the period and hasn't been checked against an official decoder yet. [Reported] To check for an S/R, use the [S/R identification guide](https://zx2ms.com/wiki/sr/identify).
