Known issues, recalls and safety
What goes wrong on a ZX2, what Ford recalled, which service bulletins exist, and how the car did in crash tests. Each item is tagged by how well it's sourced.
Common problems
Engine
- Idle surge, rolling idle and stalling. The most-documented ZX2 problem. Ford issued bulletins for it (see below). Owners usually trace it to the idle air control valve, a cracked PCV elbow (vacuum leak) or the constant control relay module, but no Ford bulletin text we’ve found names a single cause. Confirmed
- Oil leaks, including oil in the spark plug wells. Confirmed
- Frozen PCV system (1997–98 Escort line). In cold weather this can push the dipstick out and cause oil leaks. Buyer’s guide
- Thermostat housing leaks. Well known on the 2.0 Zetec generally; the evidence is Zetec and Focus owners rather than ZX2-specific data. Reported
- Timing belt. Ford’s 2003 schedule replaces it at 120,000 miles; whether the Zetec is interference is disputed. Treat the belt as critical and replace it on any car without a record of a change. Interference disputed
- Motor mounts. About 17 NHTSA complaint narratives mention them, plus owner reviews. Reported
Transmission
- Automatic transaxle failures. Slipping or delay on the 2–3 shift, with rebuilds reported between about 50,000 and 115,000 miles, especially on 2000–2003 cars. Confirmed
- Clunk into reverse on the first cold engagement (automatic). TSB
- Manual transmission. Only scattered clutch and noise reports; no clear pattern. Reported
Cooling and climate
- Heater core leaks, which show up as damp carpet or fogged windows. Ford’s fix was a restrictor in the heater inlet hose. Confirmed
- Cooling fan won’t shut off in cold weather, or no-start, on 1997–98 cars. Ford’s fix was a new integrated relay control module. Buyer’s guide
- A/C compressor seizure and a rusted-out cooling fan motor. Reported
Chassis and body
- Suspension and steering is the largest repair category in TrueDelta’s owner data. Broken rear coil springs (an Escort-line issue) and early tie rods come up repeatedly. Reported
- Brake grinding, drag and uneven front pad wear on 1998 cars. TSB
- Fuel gauge reads about 1/8 tank off, and slow fueling, on 1998 cars. The fix was the fuel sender or slosh module. Buyer’s guide
- Rust, sagging driver’s doors and broken seat-back release covers. Only one-off reports so far, so typical rust spots aren’t documented. Reported
- Road and wind noise. A common complaint in period reviews. Reported
Recalls
NHTSA files ZX2 recalls under the model name Escort. Searching for “ZX2” returns nothing, so search by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
| Campaign | Year | What | Fix | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 99V276000 | 1999 | On S/R cars (106 affected), the shift pattern wasn’t displayed where the driver could see it, failing FMVSS 102. | An adhesive shift-pattern plaque on the console ahead of the shifter. | Confirmed |
| 00V228001 | 2000 | TRW seat belt buckles weren’t properly heat-treated and could fail FMVSS 209 load tests. 144,435 vehicles across several models. | Dealer checks buckle date codes and replaces suspect buckles. | Confirmed |
| 04E048000 | 1997–2003 | Replacement driver’s seat belts (P/N F7CZ54611B09AAC) made Dec 6 and 9, 2002 may not lock. Filed for the Escort sedan and wagon. | TRW replaces the belt free. Affects a ZX2 only if one of these service belts was fitted. | Confirmed |
Technical service bulletins

Crash tests
| Test | Result | |
|---|---|---|
| NHTSA side impact, 1998–2003 | Front seat ★☆☆☆☆, rear seat ★★★★☆ | Confirmed |
| NHTSA frontal, 2003 | Driver ★★★★☆, passenger ★★★★☆ | Confirmed |
| NHTSA frontal, 1998–2002 | Not rated | Confirmed |
| IIHS | No ZX2 coupe rating. The Escort sedan’s rating doesn’t apply. | — |
These are pre-2011 NHTSA ratings and can’t be compared with today’s stars. The one-star front side-impact result is worth knowing if the car is a daily driver.
Insurance loss data (HLDI, 100 = average): collision 113, injury 131, theft 67. Reported
